Each morning, I’m awakened by the day’s first beam of light peeking over the horizon and into my billowing curtains. The ocean breezes roll across me, a gentle reminder that it’s time to meet the day. With a cup of coffee in one hand and the paper in the other, I sit on my balcony to catch up on the world.

A great blue heron flies by. The black-bellied plovers chase the surf. The laughing gulls always make me smile. Another perfect day. How shall I spend it? Playing 18 holes? Walking through a maritime forest of ancient oaks bending gracefully away from the sea? Perhaps a workout at the Health & Fitness Center? Or a day at the Spa & Shops? Or a stroll for miles along uncrowded beaches sheltered by elegant dunes? Decisions. Decisions.

Maybe I’ll just sit on the warm sand and stare as the waves dance and splash to shore. One behind the other, behind the other. Each bringing a different song in the same trance-like rhythm.

Tonight, dinner with friends at the Verandah. This time I’ll try the baked grouper in crab crust with lemon butter.
